It’s an old cliché but it’s true: the only predictable thing about racing is that it’s unpredictable. Trevor Daley and his One Speed Suzuki Canada GSX-R1000R took to the track behind the 8 ball for the July 10th and 11th Calabogie CSBK opener. With pre-season testing slowed by teething problems, the team unloaded in the paddock without a firm grip on a setup that would allow Trevor to run at the sharp end of the field.
It wasn’t until a brainstorming session after a disappointing qualifying that the crew rallied, and, with the use of Moto Spec software, came up with a new direction for bike setup. A Sunday morning practice session spill while getting familiar with the new geometry complicated matters, but Trevor believed they were on to something good. The proof would be found in race one.
Gridded eighth, Trevor dug deep from the start and worked his way through the field to fourth, where he would remain for the balance of the race. Most encouragingly, Trevor’s best lap times were identical to the frontrunning trio. Race two saw the top four in identical finishing positions, and the challenge, said Trevor, “was managing physical exertion, tire degradation, and choosing the right moments to pass competitors.”
The weekend was a test of the team’s tenacity and a strong series points haul the reward for the hard work. With the mid-summer Canadian Tire Motorsport Park round coming August 14th and 15th , and with further tweaks coming for the GSXR1000R, the season is shaping nicely into form.
New this year in CSBK is a manufacturer’s championship, and thanks to the work of Trevor and Alex Dumas, Suzuki handily leads the rankings after the first race weekend.
Trevor would like to thank the tireless work of team members Brett McCormick, Jeff Laidman, Mike Ferguson, Darin Marshall and Neil Graham. A special thanks also goes to longtime supporter Ross Millson and the fans who made their way to Calabogie to cheer the festivities on.
